1. Do your research. There are many types of tiny homes, from as small as 9 square feet up to 837 square feet. Look at the designs, which range from traditional to ultra-modern in design. Some incorporate off-the-grid designs like solar/wind power, rainwater collection, and composting toilets.
2. Decide what you need from your dwelling and what you want from your dwelling. Most people need a comfortable, dry, quiet place to sleep; a clean place to perform personal hygiene (toilet, shower); a comfortable place to sit or lie down during the day; a place to store, prepare, and eat food for the day. You may want other creature comforts such as long-term refrigerated food storage, a clothes washer and dryer etc. But think of combining these appliances in one machine. Do you really need a dryer or could you dry your clothes outside ?
3. Look at the benefits of "living small:" less space to clean; less pack-ratting of unneeded clothes, broken appliances, etc.; lower energy bills and a greener environmental footprint; fresher food that is purchased, caught, or harvested on a more daily basis; more time available for outdoor activities and entertaining; no need to sell your home when you relocate (if your tiny home is towable).
4. Realize that small houses cost more per square feet than large houses. Designing for smaller areas is more complex, as items such as built-in furniture have to be custom made to take advantage of all the space. Compact appliances sometimes cost much more than full sized appliances. If you are designing or building your own home on a trailer bed, you need to take plumbing (grey water and black water storage and disposal) into consideration.
5. Decide if you will build your own home from plans, or if you will buy an already made home new, or if you will buy a used home. There are also "kits" available which come with all or most of the supplies for building the house, along with instructions. The cheapest option for small living is to buy a well-maintained used RV or travel trailer. Craigslist usually will have several listings under $5000. You get the advantage of having something already designed and constructed, but you have the disadvantage of not being able to fully customize your home to your needs and wants.
6. Pare down your belongings: we spend about 80% of our time wearing 20% of the clothes we own, so by getting rid of most of that wasted 80%, your life becomes immediately simpler.less laundry and less indecision about what to wear that day. Instead of having 3 TVs, 2 computers, a VCR, DVD, Blu-Ray, and 3 different game stations, reduce to one computer--transfer your movies to a hard drive and a flat screen monitor can double as a TV. A laptop with a TV tuner is even more energy efficient.
7. Be creative about storage and multi-function furniture: a bed platform could have clothing storage drawers underneath. If you make a built-in sofa (without a bed) you can use the space underneath to store lots of things. A table can be made with shelves for storage underneath the table surface. Or you could design a table that folds out of the wall, then folds up and down to become a bed. Use broad, deep shelves (including built-in) and drawers, and wall and ceiling mounted items, to minimize the proportion of wasted space above, below, and around the edges of items (due to packing geometry or falling-off-the-edge risk). Consider metal furniture to reduce the amount of space consumed by the furniture itself.

Answer : In North Carolina, as in most states, I think, the prohibition against tiny homes on wheels is county by county rather than state law. This goes double for furniture: a full size sofa, a king size bed, a 6-person dinette and a large Club chair or reclining lounger won't leave a lot of space for you to walk around. An armless sofa, double-size or queen-size bed in a loft, and a folding table with 2 folding chairs that would allow you to seat 4 for dinner (using the sofa as seating) is more reasonable.
Warnings.
Not everyone will share your enthusiasm for living small. They will think you to be a little crazy to live full-time in something that they would consider living in only for one or two weeks per year at the most. If you are dating or married, be sure you and your partner are in full agreement on the subject of small living. If you are planning to have kids, be sure you know what will happen to your house at that time: will you build another small house and connect them together, or will you build a brand new house?
Be careful about air quality in a tiny house. Particularly if the house is constructed very 'tight' against air infiltration for energy savings reasons, and also particularly if more than one person is living there, or with pets. 4. Turn over a colorful trash can to make a simple night stand. If you want to revamp your bedside table, buy a cheap, colorful trash can online or at a large general store. Flip it upside down and set it by your bed for a small, cute table!
Look for a trash can with artful designs or a pretty pattern that will blend nicely with your bedspread and walls. Or, find a plain trash can, turn it upside down, and spray paint it the color you want. Try a glittery gold paint for a fun and bold option.
5. Decoupage dresser drawers with fabric for a splash of color. Cut a sheet of matching fabric to fit your dresser drawer, then wash it and dry it. Brush Mod Podge over the fabric and the dresser drawer and press the fabric onto the drawer one section at a time, smoothing it down with a straight edge as you go.
If you’re using a thin, cotton fabric, paint your dresser drawers white first. Mod Podge makes thin fabrics somewhat see-through, allowing dark colors to bleed through.
To get the process down, try practicing on a small piece of wood first.
6. Paint an old filing cabinet for modern storage space. Ask your parents if they have an old filing cabinet they don’t need anymore and transform it into a unique storage space! Lightly sand the cabinet with some sandpaper, then clean the cabinet and apply 3-4 coats of paint with a roller.
Paint the cabinet with chalk paint and label the contents of each drawer with chalk for extra organization. Or, pick a bright color like neon pink or yellow for a mod vibe.
To clean the cabinet, simply run a wet cloth over it to catch any dust and grime. Let it dry before you paint.
7. Spray paint the bases of your lamps in fun, matching colors. To update an old-fashioned looking lamp, pick up some cans of bright spray paint. Bring your lamp outside, set it on some newspaper, and spray paint it evenly on every side.
Let the lamp dry outside or in the garage for as long as instructed on the spray paint can.
Make sure to remove the lampshade before you spray paint.
8. Create a fashionable dressing area by dressing up a tailor’s mannequin. Pick up a female dress form mannequin at a craft store or order one online. Dress it in a pretty dress and place it in a corner of your room near a mirror or vanity to create a classy “dressing area.”
Go for a dress form rather than a full-body mannequin to save space and give your dressing area a sophisticated, classic look.
Use the dress form to express your creativity. Try switching out the dress form’s outfit based on the season, or put a dress on it to get you excited for an upcoming dance.
Matki jars are a household staple in most Indian households. To personalise your matki jar, consider painting it a different colour and adding patterns. If you're feeling extra creative, add decorations, such as glitter, rhinestones, stickers, and ribbons. Most of all, have fun and express your own unique style.
Method 1 Painting the Jar.
1. Paint the pot your desired colour with a clay-friendly paint. Both acrylic paints and water-based paints work well on the clay surface of matki pots. Choose a colour for your base layer and then spread the paint over the entire outside surface of the jar. Use consistent up and down strokes to achieve an even finish.
If you like the existing colour of your matki jar, skip this step.
2. Wait 24 hours for the paint to dry. It is important to wait for the paint to dry; otherwise, you risk it smudging. Place the matki jar on a flat surface away from pets and children, so that it won't get knocked over.
If the paint is still sticky to touch after 24 hours, leave it to dry for another 12 hours.
3. Paint dots onto your the jar. Dots are a really popular element on matki jars. Consider painting a line of dots right around the top of the jar for a traditional look or painting random dots for a modern look. Experiment with different sized dots to create contrast in your design.
If you don't feel confident drawing freehand, draw the designs in pencil first or use a stencil.
4. Paint lines on the jar to add another element. Both straight and squiggly lines are incorporated into most matki jar designs. Consider painting multiple squiggly lines around the middle of the jar or painting a straight line around the top or bottom of the jar. Be creative and combine the different elements to create a unique look.
Instead of painting lines right around the jar, consider painting small squiggly lines randomly over the jar for a fun, playful look.
5. Experiment with different coloured paints to create patterns. Use different colours to make your designs stand out. For example, white and yellow patterns would look great over a red base coat. Gold and red would look eye-catching over a navy base coat.
If you don't have all the colours that you want, try mixing your paints to create new colours. For example, blue and yellow make green and red and blue make purple.
Method 2 Add Decorations.
1. Stick rhinestones, jewels, or sequins onto the pot for a glamorous look. This is a great way to add shine and glitter to your matki pots. Simply dab a drop of super glue that is the same size as your decoration onto the jar. Then, carefully place the decoration on top of the glue and wait for it to dry. Super glue generally takes about 15 minutes to completely dry.
This is a great option if you want to use your matki jars at a wedding or if you want to use them as decorations.
Purchase decorations from a craft store or dollar store.
Consider placing the decorations in a line at the top of your jar for a cohesive look.
2. Sprinkle glitter over your jar to create a sparkly look. This is a great way to make your matki pot stand out. Use an iceblock stick to spread school glue over the area that you want to look glittery. Then, liberally sprinkle glitter over the glue and wait 12 hours for it to dry. Once the glue is dry, lightly shake the pot to remove any excess glitter.
School glue is also known as PVA glue.
A thick line of gold glitter around the bottom of the matki jar is a popular design. Alternatively, spread the glue in a circle shape and then sprinkle the glitter over.
3. Tie ribbon around the jar to add extra colour. Choose your favourite piece of ribbon and wrap it around the jar. Then, tie it in a bow to secure it in place. If you are wanting an intricate look, consider adding multiple ribbons. Experiment with different width ribbons to create different looks.
Ribbons are most popularly tied around the top of the jar.
To add extra colour to your jar, opt for a bright, multi-coloured ribbon.
4. Wrap laces around the jar to add a unique element to your pot. This a great way to upcycle old materials. To attach the laces, simply squeeze a thin line of super glue around the pot. Then, gently place the laces onto the glue. Press down on the laces to make them flat and cut off any extra material, if necessary. To create a pattern, layer multiple laces underneath each other. For example, blue lace, yellow lace, blue lace, yellow lace, etc.
Use patterned laces to add extra detail to your matki pot.
5. Glue tassels or pom poms onto your pot to add texture. This is a fantastic way to add a 3-dimensional layer to your matki pot. Place a small dot of super glue where you want the decorations and then hold them in place for 60 seconds so that they adhere to the glue. This is a great way to make your jar look more colourful and playful.
Consider placing the tassels or pom poms in a pattern. For example, place the pom poms in a line around the jar in a red, yellow, red, yellow pattern.
6. Place stickers on the jar to add colour and personality. This is a quick and easy way to personalise your matki pot. Simply remove the stickers from their sheet and place them onto the jar. Use your thumb to press down firmly on the stickers to remove any air bubbles. This helps to prevent bumps forming in the stickers.
Choose stickers that represent your unique personality to give your matki jar a personal look.

A room divider can be a perfect solution to not having privacy in a room or where there is a need to make the room more useful space-wise. While there are plenty available to buy, they may not come with the style or design that works for your décor, or they may just be too pricey. Fortunately, with a little willingness to do some basic woodwork and crafting, you can create your own at home for a lot less than buying a brand new one.
Method 1 Paper Room Divider.
1. Prepare the work-space first. Lay down clean sheets or similar to protect the work surface and to provide a nice area to work on.
Making the frames
1. Form three frames that create the divider. To do this, start with the first frame.
2. Saw the corners of the wood pieces at a 45 degree angle. This is necessary to allow the wood pieces to fit together snugly.
3. Lay the first frame out on the floor, on your work-space. Place a short piece (one of the pieces measuring 4 x 4 x 75cm (1 /12" x 1 1/2" x 29 1/2")) on the work surface. Then place a long piece on each side of this. Finish by placing the other short piece at the base. This forms a large rectangle, namely the frame.
4. Join the four pieces of wood together. Using the glue suitable for wood, glue the angled corners together, to attach each piece of wood permanently to form the frame. Push the join together for a bit using your hands or a clamp, to help ensure a tight affixing and to ensure that the glue works as it should. Allow to fully dry.
5. Strengthen the joint areas. Where the angled parts have been glued together, use the L-shaped plates. Screw these onto the reverse side of the corner joins. Don't worry, these will get painted over along with the wood.
6. Repeat to make the remaining two frames.
Painting the Frames.
1. Set up the paint and painting equipment. Put down a painting drop-cloth to protect the work surface.
2. Paint the frames on all sides. You can rest the frames on upturned yogurt pots or ice cream containers, or just wait for each wider side to dry before turning the frame over and doing the other side.
3. Repeat two to three times. The paintwork should appear smooth, glossy and well coated. Keep in mind how it'll look in your home. Allow to dry between each layer added.
Read the instructions accompanying the paint to help you to determine the right amount of layers. If it doesn't clarify this, try two, then go for three layers if you're not satisfied with two.
Adding the Hinges.
1. Attach the hinges to the sides of what will be the center frame. Place three hinges on each side, placing the top one approximately 30xm (12") from the top and the base one 30xm (12") from the base of the center frame. The center hinge goes in the middle between these two hinges.
2. Attach the frames together to form the divider. Attach the two side frames to the center frames at the hinges.
Attaching the Paper
1. Place the divider down on the floor, completely folded out flat. Have it facing reverse-side upward, as this is the side that you'll be attaching the paper pieces to.
2. Place the paper sheets over each frame. There needs to be an overlay section toward the middle of each frame, as the paper won't cover the whole frame length. Adjust to ensure that the paper is covering each frame sufficiently.
3. Trim the paper to fit the frames neatly. Ensure that there is sufficient paper to glue onto the wood frame part, to hold it in place. All trimming must be very straight and neat, so use a ruler if needed and/or get a helper with this stage.
4. Attach the paper. Paint glue around the wood parts and gently stretch the paper over the glue. Also gently hammer in some panel pins in each corner and center of each length the paper is attached to.
Be careful when stretching the paper, to avoid tearing it.
5. Allow to dry completely.
Finishing Up
1. Screw the corner covers onto each corner joint of the frames. This covers the joints and neatens the whole project.
2. Stand the divider up. Check that it opens and closes with ease. You may need to make adjustments if it's getting stuck.
3. Take to the room where it will be used. Set it up and enjoy your new paper room divider.
Method 2 Foam Room Divider.
1. Cut each 20x30 foam board into four (4) equal sized pieces with an Exacto knife. Each piece should be 10x15 inches.
2. Create slits. Make slits in each 10x15 piece of foam that are 0.5 cm wide (the approximate thickness of a foamcore board). Make one slit in the center, 5 inches deep. The remaining four slits will be 2.5 inches deep.
3. Arrange the foam pieces into an X shape. Do this by combining two pieces at the middle slit.
Take breaks. Cutting for this project takes many hours.
4. Round the sides of each piece. Use a large plate or something round to cut around. The end result will look much more modern and attractive.
5. Stack the X shapes by interlocking them to create a wall. Make sure to go layer-by-layer from the ground up, since you cannot add more pieces once you establish the overall width of the divider, without completely rearranging the wall.
If any pieces are left white, add Christmas or rope lights inside the vertical empty space. It will make it that much more impressive.
To stabilize the wall from falling you can use something heavy inside or outside the wall to keep it from tipping over.
Tips.
With the paper divider, do not wet it when cleaning. Only dust it with a duster or the brush attachment of a vacuum cleaner.
For the paper divider, match the paper and paint, or ensure that they complement each other well.
Try to find the cheapest foam boards. Perhaps at a 99 cent store.
Use foam-friendly spray paint if you paint it. (Ace Hardware has some small cans of it).
Warnings.
Be careful when cutting with the Exacto knife.
If the paper divider falls over, the paper may rip if caught on something. Should this happen, replace that area of paper using the steps outlined above in relation to adding it initially.
Paper room divider:
6 sheets of Japanese atsu unryu paper, measuring 120 x 85cm (48" x 34"), in pattern and/or color of choice.
6 strips of lightweight yet strong, good quality wood, measuring 4 x 4 x 150cm (1 1/2" x 1 1/2" x 59").
6 strips of lightweight yet strong, good quality wood, measuring 4 x 4 x 75cm (1 /12" x 1 1/2" x 29 1/2").
6 hinges (brass ones are nice), as well as the appropriate screws.
12 corner covers (in color matching the paintwork you'll be using).
Covers for work-space (if needed), PVA or wood glue, Ruler.
Gloss paint in your choice of color (from the never-fail black or white paint colors to any color of the rainbow, make your pick depending on your décor and personal preference; be sure the paint is suitable for wood)
Paintbrush, Painting drop-cloth, Paint cleaning items, Scissors or craft trimmer.
Foam room divider.
20x30 Foamcore boards (many of them, amount dependent on how big you want the divider).
Exacto knife, Ruler.
A round plate or round object of some sort, Spray paint (if color is desired).
